| A
white owl soared over the vast maze that lay below him. His destination
was a castle, situated in the center of the puzzle. The wind slowly
transported the bird towards an open window and he softly landed on
the bed inside. With a smooth transition the owl was gone and in its
place a man remained. His head turned circle, blue eyes taking in
every detail of the room. The open window, it cream curtains fluttering
in the evening breeze, the large ornate mirror opposite the bed, a
wooden door, a dresser, chair, the bed he sat upon. It was a gigantic
four-post bed made of a dark wood, dark red comforter over cream sheets.
It made no difference to him. He held his blonde head in his hands
as a single tear fell from his eye and landed on the stone floor without
a sound.
“Sarah” he said and that was enough.
His grief of loosing her was too great for him to handle. “Sarah”
he moaned again. She had denied him the only thing he had ever truly
desired and in denying him she was denying herself as well. He knew
her dreams and wished as well as he knew his own. You have no power
over me… The words said only minutes ago haunted him. How
could she do this to him? Hadn’t she felt his love for her?
It was all too much. He turned face down on his bed and for the
first time in many, many years he cried until he could cry no more.
One his tears ran dry he sat up.
“No” he softly whispered, “It’s
not over. Sarah,” he said to the night air “I promise
you this, we will see each other again.” Content, Jareth,
the Goblin King fell asleep.
The girl Sarah sat up in her bed. Sweat dripping
down her face. She had solved the Labyrinth, rescued her brother
Toby, but she was still frightened. She had left one part of her
mission unaccomplished. She had not destroyed the Goblin King, no.
She had heard him. Moments ago “Sarah, I promise you this,”
she said in a daze, repeating the phrase that echoed in her mind
“we will see each other again.” It was not over, only
beginning.
“I may have won the battle,” she stated
“But the war goes on.”
